A word I'm beginning to dread. English 101 is killing me. This photo, thankfully, called to me, begged me, pleaded with me to look at it, to see what it had to say; but the story I'm supposed to analyze next is just not talking to me!
What I've learned about analyzing: Don't judge. Wow, that's hard! It's much easier to judge than to really think. We can move on with our lives so much quicker; get on with what we think is the right way. Ask questions. Sometimes we look at something and right away it fits what we like. We think, "What a GREAT idea!", but if we stop and ask questions we may see a different, bigger picture and come to a different conclusion. Interpret based on evidence that our questions unearth. So broad a statement, but so narrow. Sometimes evidence is right before us. There is evidence of shadows in the photo, but the question then is do they have significance? What is the significance? What does that mean to me today? Sometimes it is asking the questions that lead us to search for evidence, to do research, to understand the full ramifications of what's being said or done. Interpretation is still somewhat subjective, but with evidence it can become closer to objective. Analyzing can create wedges between viewpoints because it's effort and change that may have to take place in one's own thinking and that's not comfortable! But maybe that's the whole point -- move us from comfortable (possibly wrong) to uncomfortable, but able to be worked with, right (or at least better).
I find analyzing to be somewhat difficult when it is on a piece of work that I would normally not even read, look at, enjoy and that is where my judgment is coming in -- the very first thing I'm supposed to suspend in analyzing! UGH!! Working on that comfort level. I'm sure it will open me up to more people, better understanding of them as individuals, and thus a better nurse! And maybe even a better citizen in this world society?
v., sniffed, sniff·ing, sniffs. 1. To inhale a short, audible breath through the nose, as in smelling something. 2. To use the sense of smell, as in savoring or investigating: sniffed at the jar to see what it held. 3. Informal. To pry; snoop: The reporters came sniffing around for more details. TAKE THE TIME TO SNIFF AROUND! WHO KNOWS WHAT YOU'LL FIND -- IS IT COFFEE? BAKING COOKIES? WORSE?!?!

Sunday to Monday in Leavenworth
Since Tiana and I had the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, Kent took the day off and we all, including Aimee, went to Leavenworth on Sunday after Meeting. The drive over was HORRENDOUS!! The rain has engorged the rivers and the whole day was just drippy!! The roadside waterfalls are truly equivalent to the spring thaw! GROSS! At the Stevens Pass summit we stopped so that Aimee could build her first ever snowman. It was SOO wet! We were all soaked in the few minutes we spent there. Tiana slipped and fell right on her bum. Not so cool since she fell right onto the spot that was injured in the car accident. We made it into town and checked in to our hotel. They let us in a few minutes early so that was great! The girls immediately fell onto the bed and turned the TV on. Kent and I walked up to Starbucks and then came back and decided we'd best be getting ready for some dinner. We went to the end of the Ice Fest and stood in the rain to watch the fireworks that concluded the festival. They were pretty good for such a small town. And they lasted FOREVER!! Or at least it felt like it since we were getting more and more soaked by the minute! Kent and Tiana ended up in Andreas Keller LONG before Aimee and I joined them! We, that being Kent, Tiana and I, enjoyed our German dinner while Aimee ate french fries!! We tried!! We then went back to the hotel and went in the pool and HOT hot tub. It was quite relaxing. A bit more vegging and we were asleep. This morning dawned absolutely gloriously! The sky was blue, the sun shone and the day was really quite warm. We walked around the main street of Leavenworth, checked out the Australian Shop and in general enjoyed ourselves. On the drive home it started to snow as we neared the summit. Aimee had slept through the snowfall last week, so today she saw for the first time what it is when snow falls! We stopped at the summit again for her to feel it fall and to catch a flake on her tongue! As we headed down the mountain the rain just refused to let up. The rivers are even MORE engorged. Getting to be a bit dire in parts! Anyway, we made it home. We managed to get Aimee all packed! The girl's in love with "jumpers" (sweatshirts) and bought plenty. Um...they don't stuff so well! She's going home with a piece of us in the form of a carry-on suitcase! She had thought that a small bag would be enough, but this is pretty full yet! Aimee turns 18 on the 31st so we presented her with a Create-a-Tumbler with photos from our time together, as well as a rock she'd fancied in Leavenworth. The rock has the word "believe" on it -- the new word she's adopted for herself. We are going to miss her as she leaves tomorrow! Thank you, Aimee, for being a part of us for these last 10 days!
And I think I forgot this link before. We took Aimee to eat at KFC since she works there in Australia. It is not the same (nor as good, if you ask her!) as "back home"!! Hard to convince her, though, that this must be right because KFC originated here!! Also included are the pictures of the girls messaging themselves on Tiana's laptop -- each with their own Facebook open! Goofballs!

More about our time with Aimee
So, I think she's having fun. If the giggles are any indication anyway!! :) I have to tell you, some of the funniest stuff has gone on here! One day I came home from class to hear these high-pitched giggles and exclamations as the girls sat at the end of the table on Tiana's laptop. They had two browsers open so that they could each have their Facebook accounts open at the same time. They were having an instant message conversation with each other and acting as though they were far away from each other, but at the same time excited to be sitting right next to each other! Weird teen stuff I guess! We have definitely had some good laughs!!
The first Saturday we invited whoever wanted to join us to go downtown. Victoria, Karissa, Charlotte and Kaylin all joined us and we had a good time riding the bus, walking all over and generally trying to give Aimee a quick overview of our fair city.
Sunday dinner consisted of a Thanksgiving-style dinner. Funny girl sniffed everything before she'd try it -- IF she'd try it!! She does like turkey (at least MINE! - not so much in lunch meat!), wouldn't even try the stuffing, sweet potatoes also wouldn't pass her lips. Pumpkin pie was not a favorite, either, but she did like the whipped cream!
Today we went to the peninsula. First through Port Gamble on the way to Kingston. Included, of course, was a ferry ride with the car actually going with us! Apparently Aussie ferries are passenger only and barges are used for getting cars around! Here's the bulk of the photos I took.

Introducing Aimee!
Meet Aimee! She's staying with us for a total of about 10 days. She's here from a community just north of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. After spending the first week of the year in San Francisco and Los Angeles, she traveled with her tour group to the rainy, snowy, cold state of Washington to live with us, her host family, until the 18th (pronounced "aye-deenth"!). Aimee and Tiana have had a lot of fun laughing, making fun of each others speech habits, and just hanging out. Aimee experienced snow for the first time EVER when the group went skiing on Monday. (A huge thanks to my co-worker Kate for letting us borrow her snow clothes!) She would have been able to watch the snow FALL last night had she been awake! Poor kid's been going since she landed and she fell asleep last night at 7:00 and didn't wake up until after I got home from work at 11:00 this morning! Aimee's introduced us to Vegemite. We hope to forget the acquaintance very soon!! Sorry, Aimee!! :) For that, she's not been a much of a fan of pumpkin pie, or nachos with refried beans either, so, I guess it's somewhat fair! "I reckon" that Aimee will have "heaps" of experiences to take home with her in her memory. I hope that we've been able to provide some experiences that will forever remain in her heart. We've really enjoyed having her and we look forward to sharing the next few days with her as well! I'm sure we'll come up with something that hopefully she'll find fun, too! Pictures to come!

WooHoo!!!
I did it! I have officially become a freshman! A hectic day to be sure, but a nice one! Started out by helping cook and serve breakfast to the homeless who'd spent the night in the cold weather shelter, ran home and did a bit of my online English requirements for the day, went to work for my review and shift, ran home to change and headed out to Math. Was VERY proud to look around me and see mostly younger than me people and all the while knowing that I had tested into this class after MANY years of no more education!! Oh happy day! I came home to these beautiful carnations from my dear hubby.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
We've had a quiet night getting ready to welcome the New Year here at our house! Tiana's with some school friends overnight and so it's just Kent and I. We've played some games, Scrabble, Trouble, Set and Quiddler, and we made spring rolls! I made up some of the Chinese mustard that we had here at the house but it smelled funny so Kent went on the hunt for some new fresh stuff. Unfortunately all he found was prepared stuff and it was BLAH!! Oh well! The spring rolls were done just right! Now we're down to a mere 20 minutes before the big year change-over! Wishing you and yours a very Happy, Healthy, Successful new year!!
